Barcelona are close to landing the signature of Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to a report in the German media.
The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the top centre-halves in Europe since joining the Black-Yellows in January 2008 and Manchester United boss David Moyes was heavily linked with a move for the German international over the summer.
Barcelona are looking for a new central defender with club legend Carles Puyol coming to the end of his career and question marks arising over Javier Mascherano’s suitability as a defender.
German newspaper Bild is now suggesting the Catalan have been given permission to begin negotiations with the defender and are willing to pay his €35m (£30 million) release clause ahead of a transfer for the 24-year-old to the Camp Nou at the end of the season.
Manchester United boss Moyes could still battle the La Liga giants for the German’s signature but the Scot is also rumoured to be interested in the signature of Hummels’ defensive team-mate Neven Subotic.
